今週は暖かいのですごしやすい。意外と日本以外の国からの閲覧もあるようでなかなか面白いです。

英国に来て2週間がたちました。下の学年の来年のMRIの志望調査も始まったようなので、今日は真面目に日常について書こうかと思います。

この記事を書いている今はちょうどタンパク質の反応の待ち時間なのでこれを書いているわけですが

朝は9時から夕方はだいたい5時前後までラボにいます。やろうと思えば4時とかに上がれるかも、っていう感じです。もう少し長くやることもできるんですが、どうしても1晩かかる反応とかがあるので結局この時間に落ち着きます。

研究室の内部は日本とあんまり変わりません。やることも。たまに実験の方法が違ったりすることがありますが、そんなのは慣れで何とかなるレベルです。ただ、如何せん大学の規模がでかいです。日本で在席している大学では、基礎研究棟というビルの1フロアの半分が1つの分野みたいな感じになっていますが、こちらでは一つのビル(だいたい5階建て)が一つの分野になっていて、そのなかで様々な教室がさまざまなことについて研究していたりするようです。ただ、現実としては研究所と違って学生の指導に忙しく、なかなか研究ができていない教室もなくはないようですが。

平日はほぼそれで昼間がつぶれます。夜は家に帰ってご飯作って食べながらフラットメイトと喋ったり、喋らなかったりという感じです。そのあとは部屋でゴロゴロしたり、翌日の予定や週末のことを考えたりといった感じです。フラットメイトと話すのは実質1時間/日ほどです。

町並みはすごくきれいです。ほとんどの建物が中世から近代ぐらいにできたんじゃないのかという感じのレンガ造りで、5階建てを超えるような建物は教会の聖堂くらい。1時間に1回教会の鐘が鳴る絵にかいたようなヨーロッパの町です。なにせ学術都市なので、学生が多いのと、あまり学業の雑音になるようなものもなくすごくのどかです。唯一難癖をつけるとすれば、寒いのと物価が高いことぐらいです。500mlのコーラが250円から300円くらい、というと分かりやすいでしょうか。奨学金ではロンドン地区ではないので安くなってしまいますが、物価はロンドンとほぼ変わらない感じで、お金の流出が止まりません。助けてください。

英国留学、となると英語が問題になりますが、読み書きに関しては全く問題ありません。話し言葉の文法は無茶苦茶ですが通じる程度には話せています。聞き取りは、イギリス英語だったりラテン系の英語だったりいろいろな訛りに苦労しています。2週間たってある程度慣れてきましたが、それでも早口で喋られると、うっ、となってしまうこともしばしばです。特に、飲みや食事の席で笑い話に花が咲くとき、なかなかテンポよく話が進められない上に笑い話というのがなかなかできないのでなかなかキビシイ時間を過ごすこともありますが、それでも下手な鉄砲かず撃ちゃあたる的な要領で話してみたら意外と、みたいなときは相当うれしいです。

まあこんな感じで2週間過ごしてますがなんとかまだ完全なホームシックは回避できているので良しとしましょう。

では、そろそろ実験の続きがあるので。

This week is much warmer than last week! When I’m looking administrating site of this blog, I feel interesting because some viewers are reading this from overseas, including Italy or US.

It has been 2 weeks since I arrived at UK. The survey for next year’s MRI has been started, so today I would like to write about my daily life in UK.

Now I’m writing this because I have 2 hrs to wait for the proteins reacting to other factors.

I always be in the lab from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.. Maybe I can finish my job till around 4 if I do quickly. I can stay here longer, but there are some procedures take over night, so I always finish around 5.

The laboratory is not quite different from the one in Japan, I feel. Sometimes there are difference of experiments’ protocols or something, but they’re so small that I can overcome with getting used to them. However, the scale of laboratory is quite different. In the university I go in Japan, there is a building “Basic medical study building” and half of its one floor is used for one field like anatomy or pathology. In contrast, one building is used for one field in this university. There are many labs in the building and studying many things in each of them. Actually, the labs are different from research establishment and there are many difficulties to get money to proceed their study, so some of them is not doing research but just teaching student in colleges.

In the weekdays, the study spends almost all day, and in the evening, I just wander around city centre and chat with flatmates during making and having the dinner, sometimes. After that, I always go to bet and just relax or think about the plan of the next day or weekends. Sometimes have a chat with other students visiting foreign countries for the same program and feel my Japanese becoming worse whenever do that. It’s always around an hour to talk with flatmates.

The city is really beautiful. Most of architectures look like being built in middle age or modern period. And all of them besides cathedral or church are less than 5 story building. Cambridge is picturesque European city having a chime of the church every one hour. If I blame about this city, it should be cold weather and high prices. You can easily imagine this with the fact that a 500ml bottle of coke is 250 to 300 yen around here though it’s around 120 yen in Japan. And Cambridge is not included in the area of London for scholarship, so it would be cheaper than London. So, I cannot stop the money flying away from my wallet… HELP ME!!! 😦

When it comes to studying abroad in UK, English must be the problem. I don’t feel any difficulties about writing or reading, thanks to Japanese English education. In speaking, I understand my grammar is terrible, but I managed to communicate with others. Thanks guys. And the biggest problem is listening. I have learned American English, so I have no problem when I was in Australia, but here I always say “sorry?” or “pardon?” to make them speak slower. It is just because they speak so fast with their own accent, not only British accent but also Scottish, French, Italy, German, Spanish or etc. I have been getting used to them, but still I have difficulties when they get excited in a chat. Making a funny story or humor and react to a kind of those story in a chat is still difficult for me to do at the same time, but rarely everyone get laugh at my story, it makes me really happy.

I have been here for two weeks like this, and still I did not feel homesick, so it should be fine for me.
