グリニッジ

夜の間に晴れちゃったせいか、今朝は5度とぐっと冷え込んでしまいました。秋になって(そもそも夏なんかなかったような？)雨の降ることも少なくなってきました。地理の気候区分では西岸海洋性気候なので1年通して雨の降る量はあまり変わらないはずなんですが…

まだまだロンドン市内のさまざまな見どころを回り切れているわけではないのですが昨日は少し郊外にあるグリニッジまで足を伸ばしてきました。今週末からOne Directionのライブやってるらしく、めちゃめちゃ人がいました。チケットは高いとこしか残ってなくて泣く泣くいかないことにしましたが(行くと多分終電間に合わない)

グリニッジといえば、世界標準時子午線ですよね。グリニッジ天文台はロンドンの東部にある王立海軍大学の南の丘の上に建っています。天気が良ければロンドンの街が一望できます。

   
 ただ、個人的にはこんな街灯りの多くて大気汚染もそこそこな大都市に天文台建てて何が観測できるんだという気がしないでもありません。

天文台では、航海と天文の結びつきと、その中でグリニッジ天文台がどのような働きをしてきたかといった展示があります。ただ、大英博物館などとは違い、音声ガイドに日本語の設定はありませんでした。

内外にいろんな時計が展示してあって、特に外の時計は24時間制の時計にヤードやフィートの標準器が付いていました。初め時計が大きくずれているのかと思いましたが。

   
 
なんといってもここの最大の見所は標準子午線。

  
意外と控えめな表示でしたが、最近の計算とかで0度線は100メートルほど東にずれたとか。なんで、実はこの看板は西経5秒にあるらしいです。夜になるとこの看板の上からレーザービームが出るとかでないとか。

この線の上で酒でも飲みたかったんですが、お土産屋で瓶ビール買うのもアレだったんで、コーラで乾杯しました。近くの人に写真撮ってもらう時にちゃんとコーラ缶掲げときました。

  
2時ぐらいになるとグリニッジについてミュージカルっぽく解説してくれる自称18世紀から来たおばちゃんが現れました（笑）

  
このあとセントポール大聖堂でEvening serviceなる礼拝に参加しました。迫力のある建物の中で教会のコーラスの綺麗な声を聞くと本当に落ち着きます。なにより、鳥肌が立ちました。セントポール大聖堂はダイアナ妃の結婚式が行われたことでも知られていますが、ここの螺旋階段がホグワーツ魔法学校の内部の階段部分に使われたことは意外と知られていません。教会内部は撮影は全面禁止なので写真はありませんが、『おーそう言えば！』的な感じにはなると思います。

Maybe it’s because the sky became clear during the last night, this morning is so chilly. The season shifted to autumn (I feel there was no summer…?) and I have less rainy days than last month. UK is defined as Cfb, so maybe the amount of rain should be steady during year…

Anyway, I visited many sights in London(still not enough) but yesterday, I visited a part of suburban of London, Greenwich. There were so many people maybe because of a concert of One Direction. I wanted to go but it will finish so late that I cannot catch the final train to Cambridge.

Maybe you’ll image the prime meridian line of the world when you hear about Greenwich.

The observatory is on the top of hill in the south of the Royal Navy college. You can see good view of London from the hill, but I think the observatory cannot observe so many things because the light from London city is strong and the atomosphere is not so clear. You can learn about the relationship between sailing and astronomy and how the observatory worked.

The most popular exhibition is the prime meridian. I stood over the line like the photo. My left foot is on the east side and right foot is on the west side. Actually, the real line under using now is in the 100m east from this line, so I was completely in west side at the moment. I wanted to have beer on the line, but that was so expensive that I had a Coke on the line. Of course, I had my picture took with raising a can of Coke!:)

At around 2pm, a woman saying she was from the 18th century came and explained about the observatory as if she was in musical.

Then I experienced the evening service in the St. Paul cathedral. It made me really relaxed because of pure voice of choir and enormous beautiful architecture. I was really moved.

The cathedral is known as the place of Princess Diana’s marriage, but at the same time, its stair was used for the Harry Potter ‘s film as inside of Hogwards. I couldn’t take a photo because it’s banned, but I felt I saw in the film.
